When we think about play, we often picture kids running around, using their imagination, and getting a little messy. But play isn’t just for children. In fact, for many adults, play can be just as powerful, maybe even more so.
Sometimes, talking isn’t enough. When an adult client begins to engage in play, something shifts. Play can help adults slow down as there is often less pressure to say the right thing. Instead, the session becomes a place where feelings can be noticed, shaped, and shared in ways that feel natural and intuitive. Play becomes a rhythm they settle into, not something they have to perform or explain.
In virtual therapy, adult clients might interact with a sand tray, arrange charactersin a room, or build something together with their therapist. These actions are not random. They carry meaning, even when they seem simple. A client might place figures far apart to show distance. They might draw a shape or build a scene that mirrors what is going on inside.
These moments help therapists see patterns that are hard to spot in words. They might reveal stuck points, sources of stress, or even strengths the client forgot they had. Play can also make space for relief and laughter, which helps clients feel less guarded and supports the therapeutic alliance.
With PlaySpace, adult clients are given tools they can choose and use in their own way. Having this sense of choice is especially important when a client has gone through trauma or when they feel vulnerable in therapy.
Therapists don’t need to change everything to use play with adults. Even small steps can make a big difference. Try these ideas:
Adults often carry a lot—grief, stress, memories, questions about who they are or who they’re becoming. They may be parents, caregivers, or dealing with health issues. Some things are hard to talk about. That’s where play can gently help.
A scene in the tray, a repeated object, or the way a story ends—all of it can offer clues about what someone is feeling and how they’re trying to heal.
Play won’t solve everything. But it can offer a safe, creative space where people feel seen. And sometimes, that’s exactly what’s needed.
