What Happens in the Pause: Navigating the Space Between Hesitation and Action

Sophia Blue

Hesitation in play therapy is easy to miss. A client might pause mid-game, close a sand tray before finishing, or change their mind about using a tool. While these moments can be quiet, they’re opportunities to explore, connect, and communicate what might be left unsaid.

What might look like disinterest or distraction is sometimes a sign of something much more meaningful, such as a signal of fear, vulnerability, or a sense that something about the next step feels too big. You do not need to rush in. Just being with the pause is part of the work.

Slowing Down Creates Safety

When a client hesitates, the best thing might not be to nudge them forward, but to pause with them. In a virtual space, this can look like giving them room to sit with their decision, to move slowly, or to return to a tool when they’re ready. PlaySpace is designed to give clients a choice at every step. Clients can move between tools without pressure, decide when to pause or restart, and choose how much they want to express in that moment. If a client needs to leave the sand tray unfinished or switch from a game to a quieter activity, our tools and games allow for that shift without disruption. That kind of flexibility means the client stays in control of their pace and process, which is especially helpful when hesitation or overwhelm starts to surface.

Soft reminders like “We can stay right here for a bit” or “You don’t have to decide just yet” can also help shift the tone of a session. It offers permission to stay in the moment, which can help clients feel more grounded, especially when action feels overwhelming.

Play as Gentle Exposure

Choice is a powerful part of play and a key piece of autonomy. But for many clients, it can also be the hardest part. In PlaySpace, choosing to flip a coping card or move a character in the dollhouse might feel like a risk. Decorating a playroom or opening a story book might feel too exposed. The pressure to “get it right” can sneak in, even here.

And that’s exactly why play matters. Clients can test out fears in an environment that feels safe. They can take new paths, play out new roles, and learn, at their own pace, that safety isn’t about avoiding the action, but about being supported while they try something new. A thoughtfully designed therapeutic virtual space makes it possible for clients to misstep, explore, and try again, without judgment.

Noticing the Small Wins

Progress does not always look like a breakthrough. In fact, it rarely does. It might look like a client who usually avoids a tool suddenly playing with it a bit longer. Or a hesitant player making a small move in a multiplayer game. These moments are easy to miss, but they can carry significant weight.

If it feels right, you can reflect that back to the client with quiet curiosity, “That seemed different for you,” or “I noticed you spent more time with this tool today.”  Simple, gentle reflections help clients recognize and celebrate their own movement forward, without turning it into a big moment.

Your Presence Matters Most

Hesitation can bring up a sense of urgency in the room. A need to shift or fix or get things going again. But more often than not, what helps the most is your steady presence. Noticing what’s happening and being okay with the quiet.

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is stay with the pause. Not because you’re waiting for something to happen, but because the pause is where it’s already happening. A glance, a breath, a moment of stillness before a small step forward are not just pauses in the work. They are the work.

Therapy doesn’t need to be fast to be meaningful. Sometimes, it’s in the space between hesitation and action where clients begin to feel safe enough to try something new. And sometimes, that’s what real progress looks like.
